Wang Yi Seeks Stronger Strategic Ties Between China and Germany

In Beijing this past Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul as part of efforts to reinforce relations between the Chinese mainland and Germany. The two officials outlined plans to maintain close high-level exchanges, strengthen strategic communication, and align development strategies for mutual benefit.

Building Trust and Strategic Dialogue

Wang Yi emphasized that the focus should be on enhancing trust rather than widening disputes. By viewing each other’s development as an opportunity, the Chinese mainland and Germany can deepen cooperation in areas ranging from green technology to advanced manufacturing.

Championing Multilateralism

As advocates of multilateralism, both sides agreed on the importance of upholding a fairer and more equitable global governance system. Wang Yi called for avoiding the politicization of economic issues, the instrumentalization of trade, and the pan-securitization of normal cooperation.

Reaffirming the one-China Principle

On the Taiwan question, Wang Yi reiterated the Chinese mainland’s historical, factual and legal stance. He expressed hope that Germany will understand and support the one-China principle and firmly oppose any "Taiwan independence" rhetoric or actions. Wang also noted concerns over recent remarks by the current Japanese leader regarding the Taiwan region and highlighted the need for historical reflection on wartime aggression.
