State Council Hails Hong Kong’s 8th-term LegCo Election as Milestone

Earlier this week, central government agencies lauded the results of Hong Kong's 8th-term Legislative Council (LegCo) election as a landmark in high-quality democracy under the One Country, Two Systems principle. A spokesperson from the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council highlighted a safe, smooth and orderly vote that saw turnout in the Election Committee, functional and geographical constituencies far exceed previous levels.

All 90 seats are now filled: 40 by the Election Committee, 30 by functional constituencies and 20 through direct geographical elections, Xinhua News Agency reported. The new LegCo will begin its four-year term on January 1, 2026, stepping in at a pivotal moment for the region.

The campaign period was marked by the sudden Tai Po fire, which tested the city's resilience. The HKSAR government activated a full mobilization to coordinate rescue operations, treat the injured and provide relief and support to affected residents. People from all walks of life rallied in solidarity, showcasing Hong Kong's famed 'Lion Rock spirit' of unity and perseverance.

The spokesperson noted that this shared experience deepened residents' connection to the election, saying the community 'turned grief into strength, demonstrating unity and compassion,' and helped drive a record-breaking turnout.

Officials also praised the new electoral system's broad representation, inclusiveness and fair competitiveness under the 'patriots administering Hong Kong' principle. They called on the incoming members—described as capable patriots committed to serving residents—to uphold national sovereignty, security and development interests while fostering good governance through high-quality democracy.

As Hong Kong prepares for the new LegCo term, observers will be watching how this council navigates the executive-legislative relationship and advances stability and prosperity for the region.
