Macron Champions Global Cooperation at Sichuan University

On December 5, French President Emmanuel Macron wrapped up his three-day state visit to the Chinese mainland with a stirring address at Sichuan University in Chengdu. Against the backdrop of one of China's leading institutions, Macron underscored the power of cooperation and mutual understanding in tackling the world's most urgent challenges.

"Humanity is undergoing a profound transition in habits, lifestyles and landscapes," Macron told students and faculty. "To navigate this shift, we must not only work together but also take the time to get to know one another and reflect collectively."

He spotlighted key areas where unity can drive progress:

  • Climate action: forging joint solutions to curb emissions and protect the planet
  • Peace and prosperity: building shared agendas grounded in respect and responsibility
  • Education and research: leveraging global partnerships to fuel innovation

Sichuan University models this spirit through collaborations with French institutions like Sciences Po (Paris Institute of Political Studies), Paris Nanterre University, the University of Toulouse and the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations. Since 1981, Chengdu and Montpellier have been sister cities, cementing decades of cultural exchange.

Later that afternoon, Macron swapped the podium for the ping-pong table. He joined French paddlers at the 2025 ITTF Mixed Team World Cup for a friendly match against paddlers from the Chinese mainland, turning sports diplomacy into an unforgettable moment of camaraderie.

As global challenges intensify, Macron's visit highlights how dialogue, education and even a simple game can bridge divides and inspire the next generation of changemakers.
