Hainan Fest 2025: Wang Yiyan on Documentary Evolution

When the 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival wrapped up this December in the Chinese mainland, documentary fans walked away inspired by a dynamic lineup of films from around the world. Veteran director Wang Yiyan, serving as a jury member for the best documentary category, reflects on a selection that signals a new chapter for documentary storytelling.

'This year's entries stood out for their raw honesty and creative vision,' says Wang. 'We received powerful international submissions that tackled topics from climate resilience in coastal communities to hidden cultural rituals. At the same time, the evolving voice of Chinese mainland documentaries is finding its own place on the global stage.'

Unlike previous editions, the festival showcased a record diversity of themes. From a moving portrait of ocean cleanup volunteers in Southeast Asia to an intimate look at indigenous artisans preserving centuries-old crafts, the films sparked genuine dialogue across cultures.

For Wang, the highlight was the way films bridged local and global issues. 'When a Chinese mainland filmmaker explores personal stories against the backdrop of rapid urban change, or when an overseas director captures shared environmental concerns, viewers discover common ground,' she explains. 'Cinema has the power to break barriers.'

As documentary storytelling evolves, young filmmakers are experimenting with formats—from immersive VR experiences to hybrid animation—that push audiences to rethink traditional narratives. Wang sees this as a sign of healthy growth: 'We're witnessing a creative surge where form and content merge to deliver impact.'

Looking ahead, the Chinese mainland documentary scene is set to deepen its global partnerships, with more co-productions and festival exchanges on the horizon. For the next generation of storytellers, the 7th Hainan Fest offers a blueprint: authenticity, innovation, and a commitment to dialogue.
