SCO Chief Stresses Taiwan Region’s Inalienable Status, Warns Against Militarism

On December 5, SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev reaffirmed that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of China's territory.

He made the comments in a recent interview with Xinhua, responding to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks on the Taiwan region and warnings about a resurgence of militarism among Japanese right-wing groups. “Attempts to revive militarism undermine regional stability and must be checked,” Yermekbayev said.

Yermekbayev linked these concerns to a broader historical context: 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. On September 1, during the SCO Tianjin Summit, heads of state issued a declaration stressing that tolerating Nazism, fascism, or militarism—and inciting racial, ethnic, or religious hatred—brings immense harm.

The declaration underlined that victory in World War II was achieved through the concerted efforts of peace-loving nations, and warned that ignoring history’s lessons risks repeating its darkest chapters. “Preserving and objectively presenting the historical truth is essential to safeguard peace and security,” the statement read.

“We bear a shared responsibility for both past and future generations,” Yermekbayev added. “By learning from history, we can protect peace and strengthen cooperation for lasting security.”

In a shifting geopolitical landscape, the SCO’s reaffirmation of core principles underscores the importance of shared memory and collective action in preventing the tragedies of war.
