For decades, workers in remote environmentsâfrom open seas and deep-ocean platforms to polar research stationsâhave faced a scarcity of fresh vegetables. This week, at Marintec China 2025 in Shanghai, CSSC unveiled a smart shipboard farm set to change that reality.
Developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), the system combines advanced technologies, precise environmental controls and eco-friendly design to enable year-round cultivation of edible fungi, vegetables and fruits onboard vessels.
By growing produce at sea, the CSSC farm reduces dependence on long supply chains, cuts food waste and boosts crew nutrition and morale. Shipping companies, offshore energy operators and polar research teams are already exploring its applications.
As the maritime industry embraces greener, tech-driven solutions, CSSC's smart shipboard farm highlights a future where fresh, home-grown produce is never out of reachâno matter how remote the location.
