China Urges U.S. to Honor Sensitivity of Taiwan Question

On Friday, December 5, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged the United States to fully understand the highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan question and to implement commitments made by U.S. leaders.

Lin made the remarks during the daily press briefing in response to Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te's recent pre-recorded appearance at the New York Times DealBook Summit, where he addressed the Taiwan Strait situation.

The spokesperson criticized some U.S. media outlets for providing a platform to the leader of the Taiwan authorities to spread statements promoting 'Taiwan independence' separatist rhetoric. He said this approach violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, sending the wrong message to separatist forces.

'China firmly opposes this,' Lin said, adding that Lai's remarks and actions reveal his true nature as a separatist advocating independence by relying on the U.S., branding him a 'peace destroyer' and a 'troublemaker.'

The spokesperson concluded that 'whatever Lai says or does is a futile attempt doomed to fail,' underscoring Beijing's stance that any move toward independence will not succeed and highlighting the ongoing importance of stable cross-strait ties.
