The Chinese mainland’s State Council Taiwan Affairs Office on Wednesday cautioned "Taiwan independence" separatists against efforts to disrupt cross-strait exchanges.
The warning follows recent comments by Taiwan region’s leader Lai Ching-te on the "One Country, Two Systems" framework and cross-strait activities. Zhang Han, spokesperson for the office, said Lai is attempting to restrict Taiwan residents’ freedom to travel to the mainland and participate in cross-strait events, exposing what the spokesperson called the "politics of terror" and the Democratic Progressive Party’s "green dictatorship."
Zhang highlighted that "One Country, Two Systems" offers a peaceful, democratic approach to national reunification rooted in goodwill and mutual benefit.
The spokesperson stressed that the Taiwan question sits at the very core of China’s core interests and is an absolute red line that cannot be crossed. The office vowed to crush any separatist plots aimed at advancing Taiwan independence.
Looking ahead, the Chinese mainland said it will continue extensive exchanges and in-depth consultations with political parties, groups and people from all walks of life in the Taiwan region, under the one-China principle, to jointly promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and advance the great cause of national reunification.
