China and Russia Elevate Strategic Security Ties

In a significant step toward deeper cooperation, China and Russia agreed on Tuesday to fully implement the important consensus reached between their heads of state on strategic security. The pledge came at the 20th round of the China–Russia strategic security consultation, co-chaired by Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Sergei Shoigu, secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

During the talks, both sides conducted comprehensive, in-depth communication on major issues involving their core strategic interests, reached new consensus and strengthened strategic mutual trust. This year alone, high-level meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Beijing have provided critical guidance for stable bilateral relations amid a complex global environment.

Looking ahead to 2026, China and Russia will mark the 30th anniversary of their strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of their Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. These milestones offer a unique opportunity to consolidate trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and support each country’s economic development and national rejuvenation.

Over the past two decades, the strategic security consultation mechanism has served as a vital platform for dialogue on international security and stability. It has helped shape strategic decision-making, foster political trust, and coordinate joint responses to emerging challenges.

Russia reaffirmed its firm adherence to the one-China principle and its strong support for China’s positions on the Taiwan region, Xizang, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Hong Kong. Both sides pledged to intensify strategic alignment, respond jointly to external challenges, and promote a more just and reasonable multipolar world.
