China’s Wang Yi Urges Britain to Adopt Positive, Pragmatic Policy

On Friday, November 28, 2025, in Beijing, China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met with Jonathan Powell, the British prime minister’s national security adviser, to call for a positive and pragmatic China policy in London.

Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of strategic communication, mutual trust and necessary coordination to strengthen bilateral ties.

He urged Britain to adopt a long-term perspective on relations with the Chinese mainland, take a rational and friendly approach to China’s development and keep cooperation at the core of their partnership. He also underscored adherence to the one-China principle and safeguarding the hard-won outcomes of victory in World War II.

Powell responded that Britain’s Labour government is committed to building a coherent, long-term and strategic relationship with China and to enhancing regular dialogue at all levels.

Both sides exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and other global challenges, signaling a shared interest in maintaining open channels for discussion amid a shifting geopolitical landscape.

With a focus on mutual understanding and collaboration, this meeting sets the stage for a more stable and constructive phase in China-UK relations.
