China Slams Japanese PM Takaichi’s Taiwan Remarks

At a regular press conference on Friday, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks on Taiwan, calling them interference in China's internal affairs. The comments, the spokesperson said, send a "severely wrong signal to Taiwan secessionists" and undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Mao Ning reminded attendees that Japan once colonized the island of Taiwan for half a century, a period marked by "countless crimes." She also condemned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party authorities for seeking Tokyo's support in pursuit of "Taiwan independence".

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and Taiwan's recovery from Japanese occupation in 1945. "Japan should deeply reflect on the historical crimes it committed, draw lessons from history, strictly abide by the one-China principle and act prudently on the Taiwan question," Mao said.

Beijing's statement underscores rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific, where regional security experts warn that diplomatic missteps could ripple across markets and travel routes. For business leaders, tech innovators and travelers, stable cross-strait ties are key to trade, tourism and international partnerships.

On the eve of key regional forums this week, China urged Japan to retract the "erroneous remarks," stop interfering and demonstrate its commitments through concrete actions—reinforcing calls for sober dialogue over provocative statements.
