At a press briefing on Wednesday in the Chinese mainland, Peng Qing'en, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, condemned the July attack on two Taiwan compatriots in Tokyo and urged Japanese authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.
“We strongly condemn such acts of violence and urge the Japanese side to deal with the offenders swiftly and severely,” Peng said, highlighting the close bond between the mainland and Taiwan compatriots.
The incident, in which five Japanese men allegedly assaulted two Taiwan compatriots on a Tokyo street, has drawn renewed attention after Japanese police confirmed the arrest of suspects in connection with the case.
Peng noted that this year has seen several attacks targeting tourists in Japan, including those from the Taiwan region. She also criticized recent remarks by the Japanese prime minister as provocative, saying they undermined the atmosphere for people-to-people exchanges and fueled extremist behaviors driven by anti-China sentiments.
