China and Australia Eye More Mature Strategic Partnership

This week in Canberra, Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, arrived at the invitation of Senate Speaker Sue Lines and House Speaker Milton Dick. Over meetings with Governor-General Samantha Mostyn, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and parliamentary leaders, he outlined plans for a more mature, stable and productive comprehensive strategic partnership between the Chinese mainland and Australia.

Regaining Momentum

Under the strategic guidance of both sides' leaders, bilateral relations have returned to a stable, positive track. The countries' economic strengths are highly complementary, laying a solid foundation for trade, investment and innovation.

Looking Ahead to APEC 2026

Australia is eager to support the Chinese mainland as host of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting next year, a key forum for advancing multilateralism in the Asia-Pacific.

Addressing Core Interests

Zhao emphasized that issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xizang, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the South China Sea touch on the Chinese mainland's sovereignty and core interests. He hopes Australia will understand and respect China's position.

Next Steps

Both sides committed to regular dialogue and to building on recent rapid trade growth. They aim to deepen cooperation in minerals, energy, climate change, women's rights and beyond as they strengthen a comprehensive strategic partnership for the future.
