Earlier this month at the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese premier Li Qiang urged G20 economies to embrace the widespread application and robust governance of artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking during the sessions on November 15 and 16, Li emphasized that AI development should follow a healthy, orderly path that is beneficial, safe and fair. His remarks come as G20 economies increasingly invest in digital innovation to drive economic growth and social impact.
Li also highlighted the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities in tackling climate change and ecological challenges. He stressed that G20 economies must adopt a science-based spirit when cooperating on environmental protection and sustainable development.
He outlined three key priorities for G20 action:
- Governance frameworks ensuring transparent, ethical AI deployment across G20 economies.
- International standards for safe, inclusive digital ecosystems.
- Science-driven collaboration on climate and ecology under common but differentiated responsibilities.
As the digital era accelerates, Li’s message underscores the need for balanced policies that harness AI’s promise while safeguarding fairness and sustainability.
