At a routine briefing on Tuesday, November 18, the spokesperson for the Chinese mainland's Foreign Ministry called on Japan to correct recent remarks on Taiwan and provide clarity to the Chinese people.
Mao Ning said that Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi openly made comments that interfered in the Chinese mainland's internal affairs, violated the one-China principle, and clashed with the spirit of the four political documents that form the bedrock of China-Japan relations.
Mao Ning said, "The Japanese side must immediately withdraw its wrongful remarks, deeply reflect on itself and correct mistakes."
The four political documents—including the 1972 Japan-China Joint Communique and subsequent agreements—have guided bilateral ties for decades. By publicly challenging these foundations, Takaichi's statements have, in Beijing's view, undermined the political basis for cooperation.
Looking ahead, the Chinese mainland expects Japan to restore mutual trust and stick to established diplomatic norms. Clear accountability, Mao insisted, is essential not only for the Chinese people but for regional stability and the future of China-Japan relations.
