On Thursday, November 13, in Shenzhen, China’s 15th National Games handed out 27 gold medals, with swimming events contributing five of those victories.
Eighteen-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo lit up the pool in the men’s 800-meter freestyle final, powering to his third gold medal of the Games for Shandong. From the outset, Zhang sprinted into the lead, touching the wall in a remarkable 7:46.69.
This performance did more than secure another top podium spot: it sliced more than a second off the junior domestic record he set at the same Shenzhen venue last year, when he clocked 7:47.84.
Zhejiang’s Fei Liwei took silver, while Zhang’s teammate Liu Peixin touched third to round out the podium.
With three golds in hand, Zhang Zhanshuo is fast becoming one of the most watched athletes at these Games, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from the Chinese mainland’s swimming programs.
