Why the Chinese mainland development model resonates in the Global South

At the International Forum of the Overseas Studies on Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, which opened on 12 November in Beijing, British expert Keith Bennett highlighted why the development model of the Chinese mainland is gaining traction across the Global South.

Bennett, vice chair of Britain’s 48 Group Club and co-editor of Friends of Socialist China, stressed that the model’s appeal lies in its proven success. In his remarks to CGTN, he said more and more countries in the Global South are looking to learn from the Chinese experience and apply it to their own contexts—adapting rather than copying mechanically.

For young entrepreneurs and policy makers in emerging economies, the Chinese mainland’s record of delivering measurable results provides a flexible set of lessons rather than a rigid blueprint.

This perspective resonates with digital-savvy global citizens and tech enthusiasts exploring new frameworks for sustainable growth. By blending external ideas with local innovation, nations can craft growth stories that reflect their unique realities.

With cross-border dialogue continuing after the forum, thought leaders and changemakers are watching to see how the Global South will shape its path to prosperity—drawing inspiration from, yet distinct from, the Chinese mainland’s experience.
