On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the Chinese premier, Li Qiang, met with King Felipe VI of Spain in Beijing, marking the 20th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership. Against the backdrop of a global economy facing sluggish recovery and softening trade momentum, Li emphasized that China and Spain are well positioned to align development strategies and tap into economic complementarities.
"China supports more competent companies to invest in Spain, expand industrial and supply chain cooperation in fields such as photovoltaic energy, green hydrogen and power batteries, and explore cooperation in future industries such as artificial intelligence," Li said during the meeting. He also urged Spain to create a fair and predictable market environment for Chinese enterprises, while jointly exploring third-party markets and boosting tourism through deeper people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
Both leaders highlighted their shared commitment to economic globalization and free trade. Li called for stronger coordination to safeguard the global economic and trade order, uphold international fairness, and advance China-EU cooperation. Reflecting on President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Spain in 2018, King Felipe VI noted that the bilateral relationship has maintained strong momentum and reaffirmed Spain’s adherence to the one-China policy.
As they mark two decades of strategic partnership, Li and Felipe VI agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges, align their development agendas across trade, investment, science and technology, and green energy, and enhance cultural ties in tourism, education, and language. Spain also voiced its support for President Xi’s four global initiatives and pledged to work with China to promote multilateralism and a robust role for the United Nations.
