Chinese Mainland Slams Japan PM’s Taiwan Remarks, Calls for Historic Reflection

On November 12, 2025, the Chinese mainland voiced strong dissatisfaction with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent comments on the Taiwan region, urging Tokyo to reflect on its wartime past and uphold the one-China principle.

At a regular press conference, State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua reiterated that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of it. He warned that Takaichi’s statements seriously violate the one-China principle and constitute gross interference in China’s internal affairs.

“We express strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition,” Chen said, adding that the Chinese foreign ministry has lodged solemn representations and strong protests with Japan. He stressed that Japan bears historical guilt toward the Chinese people over the Taiwan question.

Chen pointed to Japan’s 50-year colonial rule over Taiwan region, noting countless atrocities committed during that period. He recalled that 80 years ago, at the end of World War II, the Chinese mainland defeated Japanese aggressors, restored Taiwan region, and ended decades of occupation and plunder.

Looking ahead, Chen warned that any attempt to challenge China’s core interests or obstruct national reunification will face unwavering opposition from the Chinese mainland, its people, and its military. He urged Japan to honour its political commitments on the Taiwan question and deep dive into the spirit of the four political documents between both nations.

The spokesperson also cautioned Taiwan authorities against relying on external forces to separate Taiwan region from China, stating such efforts are doomed to fail.
