This week, China called on the United States to rejoin the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), urging Washington to accept scrutiny and address its own human rights challenges.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that the UPR — created by a UN General Assembly resolution to foster human rights dialogue and cooperation — relies on constructive participation from all member states.
China has criticized the U.S. for refusing to attend its scheduled UPR session, a decision that halted the review and led the UNHRC to adopt a consensus statement last week expressing regret over America’s absence. Without U.S. engagement, the council’s review cycle cannot proceed as planned.
“This typical move of double standard fully shows that the U.S. does not truly care about human rights and takes a selective approach on UN mechanisms,” Lin said, accusing the United States of issuing annual human rights reports with “irresponsible comments” on other nations.
Highlighting China’s Global Governance Initiative, Lin added that the Chinese mainland stands ready to work with the international community to practice multilateralism, put people front and center, and keep the global human rights agenda on track.
