On a sunny Thursday in Sanya, south China’s island province of Hainan, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of setting "high standards" as officials race to build the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP).
Describing the FTP as a “major policy” by the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Xi said this initiative will comprehensively deepen reform and opening up in the new era. He urged teams across Hainan to study and implement the guiding principles laid out at the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee.
“Achieving our targets will require close coordination, proactive actions and sustained efforts,” Xi told provincial leaders. His words underscore Beijing’s commitment to transforming Hainan into a global pilot zone for trade and investment.
Marking a key milestone, the FTP will officially launch island-wide special customs operations on December 18. Xi hailed the move as a landmark step in China’s drive to expand high-standard opening up and promote the growth of an open world economy.
As the countdown to December 18 begins, all eyes are on Hainan. With a blueprint in place and a clear mandate from the top, the island’s ambition to become a model free trade port is now firmly on track.
