In Shanghai, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze convened on Tuesday during the eighth China International Import Expo (CIIE) to chart a new course for bilateral cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Celebrating 33 years of diplomatic ties, Li highlighted how China and Georgia have maintained mutual respect and aligned their priorities since the launch of a strategic partnership in 2023. "Our collaboration has accelerated across sectors, delivering tangible benefits for our peoples," said the Chinese premier.
From Trade to Tech: A Shared Roadmap
Both leaders agreed to leverage the intergovernmental committee on economic and trade cooperation to explore fresh opportunities in:
- Trade and investment
- Connectivity and infrastructure
- Emerging industries, including the digital economy, new energy and artificial intelligence
The conclusion of the China-Georgia Free Trade Agreement upgrade negotiations will pave the way for deeper ties. Li urged Georgia to ensure a friendly environment for Chinese enterprises, while Kobakhidze reaffirmed his country's commitment to the one-China principle and promised expanded high-level exchanges.
People-to-People and Global Impact
Beyond economic goals, both sides emphasized stronger people-to-people exchanges in tourism, education, science and culture. They also called for more sister-city partnerships to nurture mutual understanding.
As fellow members of the Global South, China and Georgia will coordinate on multilateral affairs and implement four major global initiatives to uphold free trade, safeguard the economic order and promote fairness on the world stage.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with the signing of multiple cooperation documents spanning agriculture, environmental protection, inspection and quarantine, culture and aviation. Observers say this packed agenda signals a new phase for China-Georgia relations—and a model for agile, tech-driven partnerships across the Belt and Road.
