Xi and Trump Pledge Stronger China-U.S. Partnership at APEC

At the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea, Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump met in person to recommit to stronger China-U.S. cooperation. President Xi had landed in Busan, the Republic of Korea, ahead of the summit and spoke of the shared responsibility both nations carry in shaping global stability and prosperity.

From Dialogue to Action

"Dialogue is better than confrontation," President Xi said, noting that recent economic and trade consultations in Kuala Lumpur laid the groundwork for today's talks. He and President Trump agreed to keep channels open at every level, ensuring regular communication to build mutual understanding.

Trade Drives Growth

Trade between China and the U.S. now totals $688.28 billion in goods for 2024 – 275 times the volume since 1979. Combined, the two economies represent over 40% of global GDP. A U.S.-China Business Council survey found 80% of American companies in China remain profitable and committed to long-term growth.

Looking Ahead

Both leaders emphasized business as the anchor of bilateral ties, cautioning against retaliation. A recent CGTN poll shows 87% believe economic cooperation is mutually beneficial, and 84.4% see it as key to global supply chain stability. President Trump invited President Xi to visit the United States next year, promising to deepen what he called a "fantastic" partnership.

As winds and waves challenge the two largest economies in the world, Xi and Trump are steering the course toward collaboration – demonstrating that, together, they can deliver tangible results for both nations and beyond.
