In a landmark move for Pakistan's space ambitions, two Pakistani astronauts have embarked on a rigorous multi-stage selection process to train alongside Chinese astronauts, with one slated to fly as a payload specialist aboard China's orbiting space station.
Announced at a press conference Thursday by Zhang Jingbo, spokesperson for the China Manned Space Agency, this initiative follows a cooperation agreement inked in February, officially kicking off the hunt for Pakistan's next space explorer.
The selection mirrors China's own astronaut pipeline and unfolds in three stages: an initial screening in Pakistan, followed by two advanced rounds in China. Already, the preliminary assessment is underway in Pakistan, while teams on both sides prepare training programs, teaching materials and logistical support for the next phases.
"Once the final selection is complete, two Pakistani astronauts will train alongside their Chinese counterparts," Zhang explained. "One will then be chosen for a short-duration mission to conduct scientific experiments for Pakistan and support routine crew duties during the flight."
Since its inception, China's manned space program has upheld principles of peaceful utilization, equality and shared development. By welcoming international astronauts, China aims to advance space science and technology for the benefit of all humankind.
For young global citizens and tech enthusiasts, this partnership offers a front-row seat to cross-border collaboration, showcasing how emerging nations can ride the next wave of space innovation. As the countdown begins, Pakistan's space dream is set to lift off, uniting two countries in a quest for the final frontier.
