Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Bridges Cultures at Zhejiang Debut

As part of the 7th China-U.S. Sister Cities Conference, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) made its highly anticipated debut at Zhejiang Concert Hall in Hangzhou.

On the eve of the concert, CGTN reporter Yang Yan sat down with BSO president Mark Hanson and cellist Li Bo to explore how music can bridge cultures.

“Music has no borders,” Hanson said. “We’re here to build emotional bridges between audiences in the Chinese mainland and the U.S. By sharing melodies, we hope to deepen understanding and spark connections far beyond the stage.”

Li Bo, who trained both in his hometown and at top U.S. conservatories, described how the cello becomes a living link between two worlds. “When I perform a folk tune or a classical piece, I feel it resonates with listeners no matter where they’re from,” he explained.

Programming ranged from Beethoven and Dvořák masterpieces to a special arrangement weaving Chinese folk motifs into Western harmony—an artistic nod to the conference’s spirit of exchange.

This collaboration goes beyond a single performance. It underscores the role of cultural diplomacy in today’s globalized world, offering a fresh perspective for young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and digital nomads seeking real-world impact through art.
