Chinese Mainland Calls for Concrete U.S. Steps in Fentanyl Cooperation

In a Wednesday press briefing, Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese mainland’s Foreign Ministry, expressed sympathy for the American people struggling with the fentanyl crisis and highlighted past successes in bilateral cooperation. “We have provided assistance to the United States and achieved positive results,” Guo said, stressing that the Chinese mainland remains ready to work alongside its U.S. counterparts tackling this cross-border challenge.

But cooperation, he argued, must be a two-way street. Guo urged the U.S. side to move beyond pledges and take “concrete actions” to create the necessary conditions for partnership. Details of these measures were not specified, but his call reflects a growing push for tangible commitments over broad statements.

On the mainland itself, anti-drug policies are in full force. “Our position on the issue has been consistent and clear,” Guo noted. “The Chinese mainland is implementing its anti-drug policies in the strictest and most thorough manner,” he added, underscoring that it is among the countries with the tightest drug controls worldwide.

As both sides look to turn dialogue into real-world impact, the next steps will be closely watched by policymakers, business leaders, and communities affected by the crisis on both sides of the Pacific. The hope: move from agreement in principle to boots on the ground, stopping illicit flows before they reach the streets.
