Beyond Disease-Free: What Defines a Healthy Older Adult Today?

Every year on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, the Chinese mainland celebrates the Double Ninth Festival—a day that honors longevity and shows respect for older adults. This year, the festival invites us to reconsider a timeless question: what does it really mean to be a healthy older adult?

In a new episode of Health Talk, Professor Wang Hongman, director of the Institute of Health and Society at Southeast University of China, challenges the idea that health in later years is simply the absence of disease. Instead, she highlights two vital dimensions:

  • Daily Function: The ability to carry out everyday tasks—from cooking and walking to managing finances—offers a window into an older adult’s well-being. Maintaining mobility and independence keeps seniors active and confident.
  • Social Participation: Staying engaged with friends, family and community isn’t just good for the heart—it fuels purpose. Social ties can boost mood, sharpen cognition and even lower the risk of chronic conditions.

Data from the World Health Organization shows that by 2050, one in six people globally will be over 65. As populations age rapidly across G20 nations, we need new benchmarks for healthy aging that go beyond clinical check-ups.

“Healthy older adults are not just disease-free—they continue to learn, adapt and connect,” says Professor Wang. She believes urban planners, tech innovators and policymakers can all play a role by designing age-friendly cities, digital platforms for social engagement and lifelong learning opportunities.

Whether you’re planning for your own future or supporting the seniors in your life, embracing a holistic view of health is key. This Double Ninth Festival, let’s celebrate not just longevity but a life full of movement, meaning and connection.
