Chinese premier Li Qiang said Monday that Beijing is keen to bolster its relationship with the European Union amid global uncertainties. Speaking alongside European Council President Antonio Costa at the leaders' meetings on East Asian cooperation, Li emphasised that both sides face fresh challenges – and opportunities – and must work together to keep ties on track.
"Our two sides share the responsibility to implement the consensus reached by both sides," Li said, highlighting trade, climate action and people-to-people exchanges as key pillars of cooperation.
Despite geopolitical headwinds, China and the EU remain one of the world's largest trading partnerships, with exchanges in goods, services and investment shaping global supply chains. Leaders on both sides are exploring ways to streamline customs procedures, boost green technology collaboration and deepen digital connectivity.
Antonio Costa welcomed China's commitment. "Maintaining open dialogue is essential to address common challenges – from economic recovery to sustainability goals," he said.
As the global landscape shifts, experts note that a stable China-EU relationship could send positive signals to markets and help anchor growth at a time when other major players are recalibrating their alliances. For young professionals and entrepreneurs, a stronger partnership might unlock new cross-border opportunities in tech innovation and green startups.
Looking ahead, both sides plan to hold working-level talks to translate high-level consensus into concrete projects, from energy efficiency to cultural exchanges. As Li Qiang put it, "Coordination and mutual respect will guide our journey forward."
