Chinese FM Wang Yi champions unity and multilateralism at Beijing forum

In a compelling address at the Lanting Forum on Improving Global Governance in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on nations to strengthen unity and uphold multilateralism amid growing global uncertainty.

Drawing attention to the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) one of four major public goods China has offered to the world, alongside the Global Development, Security, and Civilization Initiatives Wang highlighted its role in delivering stability and certainty. He noted that more than 140 countries and international organizations have endorsed these frameworks, reflecting shared aspirations for a fair and resilient future.

"The clearest message of the GGI is to gather the strength of unity," Wang said, "its firmest stance is to uphold the banner of multilateralism, and its most desired vision is to pursue a fair future."

Wang urged all nations to defend the UN Charter and fundamental norms of international relations, fulfill global obligations in good faith, and collaborate on addressing pressing challenges from climate change to public health. He emphasized the need to respond to the demands of the Global South and to make the global governance system more just and equitable by leveraging the input of diverse actors.

Highlighting the recent adoption of recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan at the fourth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wang noted that a modernizing Chinese mainland will open up new avenues for shared development. "A China committed to peace and development will shoulder greater responsibilities in advancing human progress," he said.

As geopolitical tensions rise, Wang's appeal for unity and multilateralism offers a roadmap for nations seeking a collaborative path forward. By reinforcing existing institutions and embracing inclusive frameworks, the international community can better navigate complex challenges and build a community with a shared future for humanity.
