Wu Sihan: The 1,000-Mile Journey to the Motherland

In 1924, under the Japanese occupation of the Taiwan region, Wu Tiaohe (later known as Wu Sihan) was born. He dazzled his peers with top academic awards, becoming one of his school's brightest students.

In early 1943, driven by dreams of a professional career, 19-year-old Wu Sihan set off to Japan to study. Yet, within months, a profound sense of duty took hold.

In December 1943, Wu made a landmark decision: he abandoned his studies and embarked on a more than 1,000-mile journey back to the Chinese mainland to join the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. His trek—roughly 1,600 kilometers—spanned hostile terrains and shifting frontlines, underscoring his determination.

After the restoration of the Taiwan region, Wu Sihan captured his epic voyage in the memoir "1,000 Miles in Search of the Motherland", blending personal reflection with restless ambition. His story remains a powerful testament to youth, patriotism, and the lengths people will go for their beliefs.

Today, as young global citizens seek purpose in an interconnected world, Wu Sihan's journey inspires us to embrace bold choices and cross-cultural solidarity.
