By the end of 2024, the Chinese mainland's virtual reality sector hit a major milestone: more than 10,000 VR companies operating across hardware, software and content development. The announcement came at the 2025 World Conference on VR Industry (WCVRI), which wrapped up on Monday in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.
Xie Shaofeng, chief engineer at the Chinese mainland's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, highlighted a growing self-reliant industrial system, backed by a diversified application ecosystem and a relatively complete industrial ecology spanning gaming, education and enterprise solutions.
"Positive results have been achieved in breakthrough core technologies, the development of standards and technological integration," Xie said, pointing to a surge in homegrown innovation.
In the past few years, the sector has defined over 30 national standards and led the creation of nearly 10 international standards in fields such as virtual digital humans and VR terminal equipment—steps that are guiding more standardized growth across the industry.
Hosted by the Jiangxi provincial government, the WCVRI has convened six sessions to date, with this year’s gatherings also generating around $530 million in new technology investments. For tech entrepreneurs and investors, the numbers signal a market ripe for fresh ideas.
As virtual reality continues its rapid ascent, these breakthroughs in technology and standards set the stage for more immersive experiences that span entertainment, education and beyond—offering a glimpse of the digital frontiers ahead.
