At a Monday press briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun delivered a pointed reminder to the handful of countries that still maintain so-called 'diplomatic ties' with Taiwan authorities: such relationships are headed for a dead end.
Guo’s comments were in response to a call from a Paraguayan official for 'a serious and broad debate' on potential diplomatic and trade relations between Paraguay and China—a proposal Guo argued could jeopardize Paraguay’s long-term interests.
Emphasizing the one-China principle as 'a prevailing consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations,' Guo warned that preserving ties with Taiwan authorities 'will not shake the solid and strong international commitment to the one-China principle, or stop the overriding trend of the times towards China’s reunification.'
Highlighting where 'the arc of history bends and public opinion trends,' Guo urged decision-makers 'not to turn a blind eye to the will of the people' and to make the right political choice early for the fundamental interests of their citizens.
