China’s BeiDou Radiosonde Network Achieves 99% Accuracy in Global Weather Sounding

China has rolled out a next-gen BeiDou radiosonde system that delivers 99% accurate measurements of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure and wind up to 30,000 meters. This leap forward is part of a broader meteorological observation network spanning land, sea, air and space.

By operating 131 BeiDou-based upper-air stations — about 12% of the global network — and sharing data from 88 global data exchange stations, China contributes roughly 11% of the world’s upper-air observations. These high-resolution vertical profiles feed into global numerical weather predictions and strengthen climate monitoring.

For young global citizens, adventurers and climate activists alike, access to precise atmospheric data translates into more reliable forecasts, smarter agricultural planning and better-prepared communities facing extreme weather events. The system’s independent technology highlights a trend of emerging markets leading in space-enabled weather services.

Looking ahead, expanded data-sharing partnerships and ongoing innovation in sounding technologies promise to sharpen our understanding of atmospheric dynamics, empowering everyone from startup developers to policy makers in the fight against climate change.
