China’s Commerce Minister Meets Apple’s Tim Cook to Bolster Trade

In a high-profile sit-down in Beijing, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao welcomed Apple CEO Tim Cook to discuss the future of China-U.S. economic and trade relations. The meeting, held on Thursday, comes after four rounds of bilateral talks since May aimed at stabilizing cross-border commerce.

“These actions have severely harmed China's interests and undermined the atmosphere of bilateral economic and trade talks,” Wang told Cook, referring to recent U.S. measures targeting China. He urged equal dialogue and consultation to create a stable, predictable environment for businesses on both sides.

For Apple, which manufactures products through a sprawling network of suppliers and employs hundreds of thousands in China and the Chinese mainland, stability is more than a political slogan. A 2023 report estimates that Apple and its suppliers support over 2 million jobs locally, generating nearly $200 billion in annual economic activity.

“Apple stands ready to make positive contributions to promoting win-win cooperation between China and the United States,” Cook said, pledging to deepen engagement in China’s high-quality development. Apple’s commitment extends from R&D centers in Shanghai to retail expansion across key cities, reflecting its long-term investment strategy.

As global markets watch closely, this dialogue highlights a shared interest: healthy trade ties that underpin supply chains, innovation ecosystems, and consumer markets worldwide. For entrepreneurs, tech enthusiasts, and young global citizens, the meeting signals an ongoing effort to bridge policy gaps and ensure the global economy keeps humming.
