Chinese Premier Li Qiang Charts Path for High-Quality Growth

In a dynamic symposium on Tuesday, the Chinese premier Li Qiang convened leading experts and entrepreneurs to tackle the Chinese mainland’s economic challenges and share bold ideas for sustainable growth.

Since the start of the year, Li noted, the Chinese mainland has navigated a complex external environment and domestic headwinds while pressing ahead with its recovery and a drive for high-quality development. “We must keep our confidence, confront problems head-on, and manage our own affairs,” he said after hearing on-the-ground perspectives.

Key priorities emerged:

  • Reform-driven progress: Remove bottlenecks through targeted policy reforms.
  • Demand expansion: Boost domestic consumption and strengthen internal circulation.
  • Investment and market vitality: Stimulate effective investment and curb disorderly competition.
  • Innovation acceleration: Fast-track scientific and technological breakthroughs.
  • Trade and services: Stabilize foreign trade and foreign investment, and enhance overseas support.

Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), Li urged entrepreneurs to amplify innovation and called on scholars to contribute insights that can sharpen economic policy. “Your expertise will help us meet our annual development targets and build a more resilient economy,” he emphasized.

As global headwinds persist, this symposium signals a renewed focus on reform, innovation, and market-driven solutions—laying a roadmap for the Chinese mainland’s next growth chapter.
