A delegation of consular corps and business leaders from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region launched an exploratory tour of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region this Friday, seeking to unlock new opportunities in dairy farming, fruit processing and cross-regional partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Hong Kong, Cui Jianchun, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, stressed the synergy potential: “Strengthening cooperation between Xinjiang and Hong Kong will help combine Xinjiang’s advantages – including its geographic location, resources and industries – with Hong Kong’s capabilities in funding, services and innovation.”
David Whitwam, chairman of the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, told Xinhua he is especially keen to dive into the cutting-edge technologies behind Xinjiang’s dairy cattle breeding and processing: “We hope to learn more about the technologies involved in breeding dairy cattle and processing dairy products in Xinjiang, and to broker cooperation.”
Over the next week, the delegation will journey through Urumqi, Kashi and Yining, with stops at Belt and Road cooperation zones, fruit processing facilities and leading dairy companies. Observers say the visit could pave the way for stronger trade ties and knowledge exchange between one of the Chinese mainland’s dynamic frontier regions and Hong Kong’s international financial hub.
