Dr Yuan Jingwei Launches Liberia’s First Cardiac Unit at JFK Medical Center

At Monrovia’s John F. Kennedy Medical Center, a groundbreaking medical partnership took root when Chinese mainland cardiologist Dr Yuan Jingwei and her team from Heilongjiang Province on the Chinese mainland helped launch Liberia’s first dedicated cardiology department.

Prior to their arrival, patients in Liberia had no local access to specialized heart care, often facing long journeys or going without treatment. Working in temporary clinics and modest consultation rooms, Dr Yuan and her colleagues review medical reports, diagnose complex cardiac conditions, and provide hands-on treatment.

Beyond the hospital walls, the team engages in rural outreach and mobile clinics, extending essential cardiac services to remote communities. A core mission has been training residents of Liberia – offering on-the-ground mentorship in cardiac diagnosis and management to local medical staff.

Over more than 900 days, this Sino-Liberian collaboration has helped hundreds of patients regain the rhythm of life. By combining technical expertise with compassionate care, Dr Yuan’s work writes a new chapter in global health cooperation – one where sustainable impact and local empowerment lead the way.

For young global citizens, business innovators, and change-makers, this story illuminates how targeted medical initiatives can deliver real-world impact and inspire future cross-border collaborations.
