As the Chinese mainland's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) nears its conclusion, landmark achievements in economic resilience and technological breakthroughs are coming into focus. At a July 9 press conference, Zheng Shanjie, head of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), highlighted how high-quality development has become a catalyst for nationwide progress across all sectors.

“A period of pioneering progress, transformative breakthroughs, and historic achievements,” Zheng said. He added that the Chinese mainland has become the most stable, reliable, and dynamic force in global development.

Over the first four years, the economy of the Chinese mainland grew at an average rate of 5.5 percent annually, contributing roughly 30 percent each year to global economic growth. Total economic increments are projected to exceed 35 trillion yuan (around $4.89 trillion) by 2025—an unprecedented scale that underscores the plan’s ambition.
Consumption and domestic demand driving momentum
Domestic demand accounted for 86.4 percent of GDP growth on average, with final consumption contributing 56.2 percent—an 8.6 percentage point increase over the previous planning period. This shift highlights the rising dynamism of consumer markets across the Chinese mainland.
