Typhoon Matmo, the year’s 21st storm, has intensified into a severe Category 14 typhoon, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC). At 6 a.m. Sunday, the NMC issued a red alert—the highest level in its four-tier system—as Matmo gathered strength over the South China Sea.
The storm is tracking northwest at 206ndash;25 km/h and is expected to make landfall around midday along the southern coast of the Chinese mainland, between Wuchuan in Guangdong Province and Wenchang in Hainan Province. With sustained winds of 426ndash;45 m/s, coastal communities should brace for fierce gusts and high waves.
In response, Guangdong authorities elevated their emergency typhoon response to Level I at 8 a.m. Sunday. Residents and travellers are advised to follow local instructions, secure loose objects, and stay indoors until the danger passes.
As Matmo moves ashore and loses energy, its intensity is likely to weaken gradually. Still, business operations, transport services, and daily life in affected areas could face significant disruptions. Keep an eye on official updates and weather apps for real-time alerts.
