China’s National Day Box Office Tops 1.1 Billion Yuan

By 6:08 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 7, the total box office revenue of China’s National Day holiday shattered the 1.1 billion-yuan (about $155 million) mark. Running from October 1 to 8, this eight-day festive season is one of the busiest times for theaters across the country.

Leading the charge is the domestic war epic The Volunteers: Peace at Last, the finale of director Chen Kaige’s trilogy. The film vividly depicts the intertwined struggles of battlefield combat and high-stakes diplomacy during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950–1953).

Hot on its heels is Evil Unbound, a gripping historical drama that confronts the atrocities committed by Japanese germ-warfare Unit 731. Through the harrowing journeys of its innocent protagonists, the film brings to light inhumane experiments like frostbite, poison gas, and vivisection.

Rounding out the top three is A Writer’s Odyssey Ⅱ, a sequel to the 2021 fantasy-action hit. This installment follows a novelist faced with a dual crisis unfolding in both his real life and the virtual world of his own creation.

With audiences flocking to theaters and these three blockbusters dominating the charts, this year’s National Day box office underscores the growing vitality of the Chinese mainland’s film market.
