China's Ministry of Commerce has urged Mexico to comply with World Trade Organization rules and safeguard the rights and interests of Chinese companies, the ministry said on Friday.
In response to recent anti-dumping investigations launched by Mexico into Chinese goods — including float glass and PVC tarpaulins — a ministry spokesperson called on Mexican authorities to follow WTO procedures and protect legitimate trade.
So far this year, Mexico has opened 11 anti-dumping probes into products from China, nearly double the total from last year. Meanwhile, China has maintained restraint in pursuing its own trade-remedy actions.
"China firmly opposes protectionist measures that harm its legitimate rights and interests, and will monitor the development of these investigations closely," the spokesperson added.
Against what it describes as the excessive use of tariffs by the United States, China also urged all WTO members to oppose unilateralism, curb the spread of protectionism, and refrain from imposing restrictions on China under various pretexts.
In turn, China has launched an investigation into trade and investment barriers in Mexico in accordance with domestic laws and international rules. "Based on our findings and actual circumstances, China will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, including measures in trade and investment," the spokesperson said.
