Hong Kong SAR kicked off the 76th National Day of the People's Republic of China at Golden Bauhinia Square, with China's national flag and the Hong Kong SAR flag rising to the strains of the national anthem. The morning ceremony brought together government officials, community leaders and business figures to mark a milestone in the city's history.
Among the dignitaries were Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; John Lee, chief executive of the HKSAR; Zhou Ji, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Dong Jingwei, director of the Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Cui Jianchun, commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR; and Lai Ruxin, political commissar of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison.
Later, a grand reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center set the stage for reflections on progress and future ambitions. In his keynote speech, Chief Executive John Lee emphasized China's ongoing drive for opening up and high-quality development, underlining its role in bringing Chinese wisdom to global governance reform.
"Hong Kong's ascent in international ratings shows that our One Country, Two Systems framework continues to deliver," Lee said. He noted that recent global competitiveness surveys placed Hong Kong among the top financial centres worldwide, a testament to the united efforts of the government and the people, and to the city's resilient economic outlook.
Looking ahead, Lee called for innovation and reform to keep the "Pearl of the Orient" shining. "I am confident that by working together, innovating and embracing reforms, we will turn our beloved Hong Kong into an even better home for everyone," he said.
