Mindful Care: Navigating Alzheimer’s with Love
Every September, World Alzheimer’s Month sparks a global push to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and all forms of dementia. Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, gradually erodes memory, thinking and daily life.
According to the World Health Organization, 57 million people worldwide live with dementia. Alzheimer’s accounts for 60% to 70% of cases. In China alone, over 16 million residents are affected.
Professor Guo Yi, lead investigator at Shenzhen Bay Laboratory and principal expert for the Brain Health Program at United Family Hospital, emphasizes that early screening is a game changer. “Distinguishing normal aging from Alzheimer’s can be tricky, but Alzheimer’s often advances much faster,” he notes. Catching the disease during the mild cognitive impairment phase offers the best chance for effective intervention.
China has launched a national action plan, led by 15 institutions including the National Health Commission and the National Development and Reform Commission. The plan outlines seven key tasks—ranging from prevention and screening to treatment, rehabilitation and care—with a goal to build a continuous dementia prevention and control system by 2030.
For young global citizens, busy entrepreneurs, travelers and changemakers, the message is clear: tune in to your loved ones, manage risk factors with healthy habits, and consider early medical screening. As populations age worldwide, proactive steps today can shape a healthier tomorrow.
