In a landmark shift, China announced it will no longer seek special and differential treatment in WTO negotiations—a move the WTO called a pivotal moment for its 24-year membership.
This move rolls out the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), unveiled by President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin. He framed global governance at a new crossroads, outlining five pillars: sovereign equality, the rule of international law, genuine multilateralism, people-centered development, and an emphasis on actionable outcomes.
At the UN General Assembly's 80th session, Premier Li Qiang underscored the GGI's role in charting a fairer, more equitable global system and committed China to joint efforts tackling real-world challenges and advancing peace.
Addressing Global Governance Gaps
Today's global landscape faces deepening governance deficits: under-representation of the Global South, eroding authority of the UN, and struggles to respond collectively to crises. The GGI aims to bridge these divides and has already attracted support from countries and regions such as Russia, Malaysia, Slovakia, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Nauru, alongside endorsement from the United Nations.
Putting Principles into Practice
Building on its Global Development, Security, and Civilization initiatives, China introduced the AI+ International Cooperation Initiative. This new campaign encourages nations to design AI projects tailored to public welfare, tech innovation, industrial application, cultural enrichment, and talent cultivation.
Tian Dewen of Renmin University's Institute of Global Governance and Development notes that global issues must be addressed through consultation among all nations, highlighting China's preference for collective action over unilateral rule-making.
Looking Ahead
As challenges like climate change, health threats, and digital divides grow, the Global Governance Initiative represents China's bid to foster inclusive, sustainable solutions. For entrepreneurs, tech enthusiasts, policy makers, and travelers alike, the GGI offers a new blueprint for shaping an interconnected and equitable future.
