China Probes Mexican Trade Barriers in Pushback Against Tariffs

China's Ministry of Commerce has initiated an investigation into Mexico's recent tariff hikes and trade restrictions targeting Chinese imports. Effective Thursday, the probe will examine measures such as raised duties on products from non-free trade agreement partners and other investment limits imposed over recent years.

In a statement, a ministry spokesperson stressed the need for countries to oppose unilateralism and protectionism, arguing that third parties should not bear the cost of coercive trade policies. The spokesperson warned that Mexico’s planned additional tariffs—even if framed within WTO rules—could undermine confidence among global investors and damage the country’s own business environment.

The investigation aims to safeguard the interests of China’s relevant industries. Based on the findings, the ministry will issue an objective and fair ruling and take appropriate measures to protect China’s legitimate rights and interests.

Experts say this move reflects growing tensions over global trade dynamics, as emerging markets and major economies navigate tariff debates and strive to maintain open investment channels. The outcome of this probe may influence how businesses in both countries approach future deals and highlight the continued importance of multilateral trade frameworks.
