Global Coastal Ecosystem Status Report Unveiled at World Coastal Forum

The first systematic assessment of coastal ecosystems, the "Global Coastal Ecosystem Status Report," was unveiled at the opening of the World Coastal Forum (WCF). Jointly compiled by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Chinese mainland and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the report marks a milestone in our understanding of coastal health and resilience.

Coastal ecosystems bridge land, freshwater, and marine realms, hosting some of the planet's richest biodiversity and providing vital services for communities and economies. This data-driven snapshot reveals striking zonal patterns: tropical regions harbor 88 percent of the world’s seagrass beds, 97 percent of mangroves, and 99 percent of coral reefs, while temperate zones boast 69 percent of coastal salt marshes alongside the majority of kelp forests and mollusk reefs.

Beyond the numbers, the report underscores the importance of protecting these frontier habitats amid climate change, urban pressures, and pollution. As young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, we can champion sustainable policies, innovative conservation tech, and immersive eco-travel that celebrate and safeguard these blue-green frontlines.

With this landmark report in hand, the global community has a clearer roadmap to prioritize action, foster resilience, and ensure coastal ecosystems continue to thrive for generations to come.
