At the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, Chinese premier Li Qiang met with Bill Gates, chair of the Gates Foundation, to discuss deepening China-US exchanges and cooperation for practical global health results.
Li praised the Gates Foundation's long-term commitment to poverty reduction, health services, development, and philanthropy. He noted that China has built the world's largest disease control and medical service system and is actively engaging in global development cooperation.
Looking ahead, Li said China stands ready to expand collaboration by launching more joint projects along the entire health chain, from research and drug discovery to on-the-ground implementation. He also highlighted the value of trilateral and multilateral initiatives with developing countries to maximize benefits for communities worldwide.
To drive this agenda, Li pointed to strategic hubs such as the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute in Beijing and the Shanghai Center of Excellence for Global Health and Development, urging the foundation to deepen ties with relevant Chinese departments and local partners.
Li emphasized that a sound and stable China-US relationship benefits not only the two countries but the world at large. He called for close cooperation to strengthen global governance and jointly promote stability, development, and prosperity amid mounting challenges.
Bill Gates welcomed China's advances in scientific and technological innovation, artificial intelligence, healthcare, and poverty reduction, saying these achievements have drawn global attention. He affirmed the foundation's eagerness to deepen substantive cooperation in global health, especially in emerging markets, to drive broader progress.
Describing US-China ties as one of the world's most important bilateral relationships, Gates pledged that he and the Gates Foundation will champion closer communication and joint action to tackle pressing global issues.
