At a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun called on the US and Russia to step up and fulfill their special responsibilities on nuclear disarmament by resuming the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).
His remarks came after Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is prepared to continue adhering to New START limits after it expires next year – but only if Washington provides a reciprocal response. China appreciates Russia's positive stance and reiterated its consistent position on strategic arms control.
Guo noted that as the two countries with the largest nuclear arsenals, the US and Russia should earnestly resume treaty implementation and begin talks on follow-up arrangements. He added that both sides should continue to significantly and substantively reduce their nuclear stockpiles, a move widely expected by the international community.
With global eyes on strategic stability, this call underscores the need for major powers to lead by example and ensure a safer world through concrete disarmament steps.
