China’s Fujian Carrier Completes Historic Catapult Tests

In a milestone for naval aviation, the Chinese Navy announced Monday that three carrier-based aircraft — the J-15T, J-35, and KongJing-600 — have all successfully completed their first electromagnetic catapult takeoffs and arrested-landings aboard the Fujian, China’s first domestically built, catapult-equipped aircraft carrier.

The tests, conducted since the carrier’s first sea trials in May 2024, verified the compatibility of the ship’s fully indigenous electromagnetic launch and recovery systems with multiple aircraft types. This achievement marks the Fujian’s initial full-deck operational capability and sets the stage for a diverse fleet of carrier-based jets to join its air wing.

From shore-based flight decks to integrated at-sea operations, China’s carrier aviation has accelerated in recent years — transitioning from ski-jump launches to advanced electromagnetic catapults, and evolving from demonstration flights to combat readiness. The successful trials demonstrate the navy’s ongoing push toward building a world-class maritime force.

Display highlights included the three jet types, which were also showcased during the September 3 military parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. As the Fujian continues equipment commissioning and stability assessments, these tests underscore a significant leap in carrier technology and operational versatility.
