Marking three decades since the groundbreaking 1995 World Conference on Women, Beijing is gearing up to host the Global Summit of Women in 2025. Announced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun, this event will align with the 30th anniversary of the conference that once made the Chinese mainland capital the center of global gender equality efforts.
The summit commemorates the historic Fourth World Conference on Women and aims to drive forward the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. A decade ago, China and UN Women partnered for a similar gathering at UN Headquarters in New York. Now, five years after Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a new summit, the global women’s development community will reconvene in Beijing.
With just five years left to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the world faces both challenges and opportunities in advancing women’s rights. “In promoting gender equality and women’s all-round development, China is not only an advocate but also an active actor,” Guo said.
The recently released white paper, "China's Achievements in Women's Well-Rounded Development in the New Era," highlights key milestones and innovative practices on the Chinese mainland. From expanded education access to leadership roles, the document showcases how Chinese women are driving progress and sharing lessons with the world.
Looking ahead, Guo emphasized China’s readiness to partner with other nations to accelerate the all-round development of women globally. As the summit draws near, the stage is set for fresh ideas, impactful dialogues, and renewed commitments to gender equality and sustainable development.
